maths review

It looks like my last post had many views! Thank you everybody for coming!
To celebrate I will share one of my students favorite games.
When Summer is almost here they start feeling bored about mental math, so last year I came up with this idea during the Summer to have them enjoy this practice again. I was doing some cleaning at home when I found some board games my mother wanted to donate. This was a disgusting board game that consisted on picking inside this man's nose. The winner was the one that made his brain jump. Disturbing...I know.
So a few weeks ago I introduced my first graders to "El Señor Mocoso". I was a bit worried but they loved it!
So here is what we do. I ask them three rounds of addition problems and the one that guess 2 o more win the chance of picking inside his nose... If anybody pulls out the brain they get a round of applause from their classmates.

This silly game has returned their motivation.

Spanish Maths Resources

I love teaching maths to firstgraders, you have many manipulatives, foldables, games... You can find tons of ideas on the internet. When teaching maths I find it very easy translating online printable resources but what I can't do is translating online games.
So here I am sharing some online maths games that my students play in Spanish. They are classified 1-6 grade. You can use it on your Smart Board or just send them to practice at home. Have fun!

Verbs unit

We are finishing our verbs unit and I just uploaded it to TPT.

We have been very busy, learning a lot with this unit. My students enjoyed making verb lists so much that today I found a 'Funny verb list'. I wish I had taken a photo but it was something like: mear, cagar... I couldn't help laughing, now I know it was a meaningful unit for them.
Some of the activities we enjoyed the most were the Time Travel Machine and making up silly stories about the past or the future. When I become 20 years old I will be an astronaut and I will discover a new planet....

We had a funny story about someone's mother that did not have a 3DS as a kid and had nothing to play with. Too funny!

We are studying verbs

I have always thought that verbs are one of the most difficult things I teach in First Grade.
Spanish verbs aren't easy. You need to know a lot of tenses, pronouns and learn many conjugations and irregular verbs.

In 1st-2nd grade students are not required to know all this.
So these are our objectives in this unit:
verbs anchor chart

- Learn the definition for verb.
- Being able to classify verbs depending on the ending.
- Understanding verb tenses and identifying: past, present and future tenses.

We spent some time thinking about verbs ending with -AR, -ER and -IR.
Then I did this anchor chart to remember some of those verbs. Then we traced the flower petals to match the endings written in the Sun. I love the way it looks, so I thought I could share.

Mother's Day Card

I just finished one of my projects: My Mother's Day cards. I did 3 different cards because I always leave them on the writing center for my students to choose.
The three of them are translated into Spanish and two of them are included with no text.

Have fun!

Last day of Spring Break

Today is my last day of Spring Break, or what I call 'PLANNING DAY'. I've been working on my week plans for the whole day.

The good news are that I will be able to start my animals unit with my students.
The bad news are that my TPT work is a bit 'delayed'. Many things in progress but nothing ready to be posted.

Here are the things I'm working on. Stay tuned during next weeks.

So what have you been teaching lately? Our animals unit is the last one of the year. Which are your next units?

Where can I buy cheap books?

World book day (April 23) is a great event in my school. I try presenting good books to my classroom on that day and we have a read aloud every day during that week.

Spring Break Linky Party

MS H. is having a fun linky party at her blog and I'm joining.
Click on the picture to know what we are doing during our Spring breaks and enjoy yours.

I'm in the middle of my Spring break. I had many things to do on my list, but there is no way I can do everything. So here is what I have done so far:

I went to celebrate some Easter days with friends, we went to the countryside and eat barbecue. We have been doing this for some days... That's why I can't do don't want to do other things.

We also watched a football match (or what Americans call soccer).

And these are the things I still HAVE to do:
Planning for my classroom.
Organizing my closet.

What do I always leave the fun part at the end?

I've been tagged!

Here are the rules:
1. You must post the rules and link your tag back to the person who tagged you.
2. Answer the questions of the person who tagged you.
3. Create 10 questions of your own for others to answer.
4. Tag 10 people and link it with your post.

Here are the questions that Krista from The Second Grade Super Kids sent me:

1. What is your favorite color to paint your nails? I usually don't paint my nails, but when I do I like them black.
2. Do you have anything that you collect in your classroom to display (ie. I have an obsession with sock monkeys!) Do plastic containers count? I could easily have more than 50... I like postcards. I save all the postcards the students send me every year. Love those memories.
3. What is something you do every year for open house at your school (ours is coming up and I would love ideas!)? We don't have Open House in Spain... I would love having one. I once read about a teacher that created a game so kids and parents could discover the classroom together. I would like doing something like that.
4. Do you have a pet....do share!? No, I don't have pets. I live in a small apartment.
5. What time do you usually wake up and get to school on a typical school day? I get up al 7:30 and leave home about 8:30 and walk to school. I live about 25 minutes walking from my school. We start at 9:00.
6. What did you dress up as on the last Halloween that you dressed up? We don't really celebrate Halloween in Spain. It started a few years ago. But my last disguise in school for last Mardi Grass was as a diver. We were celebrating water year in our school. And there is no way I share that photo!
7. What is something silly that you are afraid of? (I am afraid of fish...silly right? or so I am told!) I 'm scared of birds. It's quite silly... I shouldn't see that Alfred Hitchcock film.
8. What is your favorite part of working at your school, besides the students in your classroom? I am in the Theater  group and also in the library. I could not decide because I love drama and books.
9. What tv show do you can you absolutely not miss each week? We have a programme in Spain called Spanish people around the world (that would be the translation) I imagine myself living abroad every time we watch it.
10. What is the #1 thing you hope your students leave your classroom remembering at the end of the year? The peaceful environment we have when we all learning together and helping each other. I love that humming in the classroom when working in small groups.

I'm going to send this to all my friends in Global Teacher Connect: (I'm cheating because there are 13 people in my list, so feel free to answer or not).

My Questions are:

  1. Where are you from?
  2. Where do you teach?
  3. Which subject and grade do you teach?
  4. What would you do if you weren't a teacher?
  5. What do you wear to school?
  6. What did you do during spring break?
  7. Where would you like to travel next Summer?
  8. Imagine that you earn some kind of School Lottery and you can buy anything for your school/classroom. What would you get?
  9. Which is your favorite store for teaching materials?
  10. Which is your favorite store for clothes?

I'm on Spring break, more about Pascua in Spain

I've been some days far away from my computer because I'm on Easter break.
You have been really nice on all your comments so I wanted to tell you a bit about Pascua in Spain.
If you have visited Sevilla during Easter you may know about 'Procesiones de Semana Santa'. But I'm not going to tell you about that, because this is a teaching blog and I'm not in Sevilla.

I'm going to write about what kids DO during this holiday.
We spend lots of time outside, we get together with family or friends and go for picnics to the mountain or the beach. We have lunch together and kids play all day. After that, we eat MONA. You can find lots of different types of monas: big, small, with boiled egg, with chocolate egg, without egg...
You can eat your mona with, boiled egg,  raw easter sausages or chocolate.

After the snack kids sing some traditional Easter songs and play jumping ropes or kites. I hope You enjoyed reading! Have a good spring-break!

Celebrating Easter

Only two days to our  Spring break. We have had our tests (that came out really well) and everyone is getting their report cards to take home.
Today we have created an Easter Bunny portrait using markers, watercolors and a cute Easter ribbon I had from last year.

And tomorrow we are going on a trip! We will sing traditional Easter songs (in Spanish, of course) and we will eat some 'mona' with chocolate and eggs.
